KARP :- Kalpakkam Atomic Reprocessing Plant

Atomic Reprocessing technology has been developed to chemically separate and recovers fissionable plutonium from exhausted nuclear fuel. In the beginning, this technology was used for the extraction of plutonium for the production of nuclear weapons. Kalpakkam is situated in the southern part of Chennai. In 1971, an atomic reprocessing plant was established at Kalpakkam and named Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR). After Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), IGCAR is the second largest establishment of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). At the time of establishment, it was named Reactor Research Centre (RRC). The present director of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) is Dr. A.K. Bhaduri. It includes researches on Atomic Energy, Material Physics, Nano Sciences, Electronics and Instrumentation, Reactor Engineering and Metallurgy.
