RGNDWM:- Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission

RGNDWM is the acronym for Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission. In 1972-73, the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP) was introduced by the Government of India. The aim was to assist the states and Union Territories to accelerate their pace of coverĀage of drinking water supply. This program was given a prime approach when the Technology Mission of Drinking Water and Related Water Management which was also known as the National Drinking Water Mission (NDWM) was launched in the year 1986. This mission was later renamed as the Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission (RGNDWM) in the year 1991. Under the Minimum Needs Programme (MNP), the state governments have been implementing programs for the rural water supply. Through RGNDWM, the central government supports the efforts of the state governments by providing assistance under ARWSP. Powers have been decentralized to the states for implementing sub-mission programs. Funds have been allocated according to the geographical area of the states. This means that more funds have been given to the states that have a large number of uncovered and drought-prone, desert regions as compared to states with abundant water supply.
