UPROV:- Union for Protection of New Varieties of Plants

The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants or UPOV in French it is termed as Union Internationale pour la protection Des obtentions Végétales. It is an organization which is intergovernmental and its headquarters is situated in Geneva that is in Switzerland. At present, the Secretary-General of Union for Protection of New Varieties of Plants is Francis Gurry.

UPOV was set up by the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. This convention was taken into the practice in Paris in 1961 and later on, it is revised in many years such as 1972, 1978 and 1991. The main aim in the establishment of the Union for Protection of New Varieties of Plants is to provide the protection of new varieties of plants by utilizing an intellectual property right. With the help of codifying intellectual property for plant breeders, UPOV objectives are to encourage the development of new varieties of plants for the betterment of society.
